Proposal: Fat Cat

I will write an essay on the book, Fat Cat. Fat Cat is about a teenage girl named Catherine who is in all AP classes because she is super smart, and super funny. Not only that, but she is obese with a self-esteem issue. However, it is all going to change when Mr. Fizer, her science teacher, assign the class their seven month science project on whatever random picture they pick out out of his Stack. Catherine picture is a prehistoric picture of Homo erectus. Looking at the picture made her realize that back then, people were not obese; they ate healthy foods and therefore are healthy. Catherine, then, use herself in her own science experiment to live and eat like our earliest ancestors to lose weight.

Fat Cat is a Gateway book that addresses the current cultural phenomenon issue on teenage obesity. In this essay, I will argue that the book does not accurately depicts realistic ways teenagers deal with obesity in the 21st century. Even though Catherine eats healthy foods throughout her science experiment, most people in our culture do not usually go the healthy way. They either want to lose weight and not do it because of weak determination or they will want to lose weight and go to the extreme (such as those that are anorexia). There are very few teenagers that will actually go the healthy way.

I will begin my essay with statistics of the rising rate of teenage obesity in America. Then, I will introduce my thesis statement (The book, Fat Cat, unlike any other books, addresses a popular cultural issue in America: teenage obesity. However, the way the main character lose weight does not portray accurate depiction on how real teenagers lose weight.) Next, I will incorporate several paragraphs summarizing the book, as well as explaining ways many teenagers in our culture go the extreme way or not at all. Finally, I will end with a counterargument and my conclusion--where I will restate my thesis statement."

Questions:
  1. Does the book accurately addresses the cultural issue of teenage obesity in America?
  2. Does the book accurately depicts realistic ways teenagers will do to lose weight?

  1. Obesity is a bog issue in our culture. This book seems like it is a realistic depiction of how to lose weight the healthy way. There are so many fads out there on how to lose wieght the fastest without even trying, but that is unhealthy and unrealistic for most people.

  2. I think the book does a good job of a way for a teenager to lose weight, but it is not realistic. Catherines' approach to losing weight was creative, but not realistic in the real world. I think as humans evolved, so did the way our body systems work. It may be dangerous to each like our earlist ancestors did. The book does not depict a realistic way for a teen to loose weight, because todays generation is more about the quickest way to lose weight.

  3. From being someone who has not read this book and just going off of the information provided; it sounds like it does accurately address the cultural issue of teenage obesity. Going from what I read it does not seem that the book has a realistic way of teenagers dealing with obesity.

  4. I have never read the book, but it sounds like a creative way to lose weight in a bad way. Darrianna is right about as humans envolve, so do our body systems. It does seem like it could possibly depicts the realistic ways teenagers will do to lose weight from what your summary tells us.

  5. The book probably does not accurately depict teen obesity in America. It probably is a poor representation of how to lose weight as well. Going on a diet like our early ancestors lived on would be detremntal to a person health unless they adopted the life style that goes with it aswell, and to do so would be, well absurd.

  6. Ive never read the book, but I highly doubt its an accurate representation of a way to lose weight. Hundreds of years ago our bodies and environment were completely different than how they are today and we are physically incapable of reliving the way our ancestors did physically.

  7. I think it would adress the issues surrounding being an obese teenager, but not the realistic way to deal with it. How would she live / eat like our ancient ancestors? She would still sleep in a bed every night and be surrounded by a modern environment - it doesn't seem realistic.

  8. I have to say i love this book and will read it again. Teenage girls all over are like this they loose weight for someone and they never see you till you change. It is a very bad way to eat not healthy. If you wanna loose weight do it the right way and exercise.

  9. I think it addresses the issue of teenage obesity in a creative way that makes it interesting to read. I haven't read it, but it seems a little unrealistic in the way she chooses to go about losing weight. There were so many circumstances that have changed very much since ancient times, but I think the idea of the book was to discretely state that the way things are now (teen obesity) is much different than it used to be because of eating habits. Maybe the book is the author's way of saying this.

  10. I like that you're doing it about a book! I've never read the book but I agree with what everyone else says about it being unrealistic. How does she adapt her life to be like those of earlier humans? I think you should explain that a little more!

  11. I never thought about using a book. you should also talk about how many readers actually read this book to show how its influence could have spread. Maybe talk about how may books have been sold and so on.

  12. I haven;t read this book, so I can't really say if I think it's realistic or accurate. I do think there is an obesity problem among America's teens which needs to be addressed. But it should be addressed appropriately and in a safe way.

  13. I feel like the idea of doing a book was great! But will this effect everyone?

  14. 1. No because it addresses only one person, everyone is different, so I don't feel like this book can accurately address everyones struggle.
    2. I can't honestly say if the ways are realistic because I have not read it and your post doesn't describe them enough. But I am pretty sure it might be realistic because people will do anything to lose weight.

  15. I haven't read this book, but based on the summary, I don't feel like the book accurately depicts the issue of teenage obesity. If this girl had self esteem issues, she may choose the picture and project as inspiration to help her lose weight, but making herself part of her project seems a little far fetched.

  16. I have never read this book, but the summary you provided was encompassing enough for me to understand it. I think the idea of losing weight through a science project isn't exactly right, but it is creative. Losing weight when someone is obese is a total life style change, because to stay in shape takes commitment to physical activity and healthy food. So the book may address the personal struggle of being a obese teen, but I don't think it address accurate ways of losing weight.

  17. 1)The book shows a way to lose weight but it is not realistic.
    2)It doesn’t seem realistic but I wouldn't really know.

  18. 1. I'm pretty sure the Biggest Loser has shed more light on teen obesity rates than any other source.
    2. Teenagers these days will starve themselves before going on a diet. Lots of teenagers don't eat breakfast because they think that that will make you look skinnier. If anything, it makes you feel like crap.

  19. I havent read the book, but Im not sure if it accurately adresses teenage obesity as a whole. It adresses one girls struggel with weight and how she dropped it.
I know that teens will go to any measure to get the weight off or keep it off, but I dont see this example as a realistic way for many teens to lose it.
